Society and culture

Our study of society and civilization combines theory with practice in exploring the myriad opportunities and obstacles to unity in Muslim regions.

This discipline focuses on the ways in which the Ummah can mobilize Muslim solidarity and how it informs the ideological, conceptual, and lived experiences of Muslims. In addition, concepts and strategies for social change are considered through engagement with classical and contemporary Islamic thinkers who have explored historical, cultural, and social change patterns, as well as modern social theories, concepts, and disciplines such as futures studies, cultural studies, and systems thinking. We aim to provide multidimensional and multi-layered micro, meso, and macro meta-analyses of issues affecting Muslim societies in both majority and minority contexts.

Some of the questions and areas covered in our study of society and civilization

What are the immediate and long-term social challenges facing individual Muslim states?

What can we learn from influential non-Muslim thinkers and social movements of the recent past and present?

How can we build, sustain, and promote networks that nurture new generations of Muslim scholars, activists, entrepreneurs, and influencers who think in an ummah-like way?

What are the most effective ways to work collectively to address the social and cultural challenges we face in our individual countries, as a nation, and as human beings?
