Political ideology
Our approach to political theory focuses on the ummah as a central conceptual site in the study of explanatory/empirical questions in political science as well as normative/normative questions in political philosophy.
Ummah political theory encompasses a wide range of issues related to the nature of siyasa sharia, iqamah al-din, and the Quranic mission, as well as human rights, questions of collective existence and action, etc. All of this is done with and through scholarship related to Islamic and human sciences.
Some of the questions and areas covered in our study of political theory
Classical Islamic political theory (major thinkers, models, development, lineage, critics), with special attention paid to the theoretical aspects of political science and the Ahkam Sultaniya literature.
Analysis and critical review of liberal political theory and its core concepts (freedom, democracy, secularism)
The political ideology of the Caliphate and its institutions
Analysis and critical review of governance practices in historical caliphates
An analysis and critical assessment of authoritarianism, inaction, and chaos in the postcolonial and contemporary Muslim world
Modern Islamic political theory (major thinkers, movements, models, development, genealogy, critics), with special emphasis on its engagement with contemporary issues.
Consideration and criticism of illiberal ideologies (including communist, chauvinist, Christian, Marxist, feminist, and colonial ideologies)
